STEAM Magnet School

Founded in 1981, The STEAM Magnet is part of the LAUSD Student Integration program.  A school-within-a-school concept, our program empasizes Mathematics and Science.  Teachers promote a challenging academic program, encouraging students to achieve maximum potential.  Magnet students consistengly maintain better attendance and higher scores on statewide tests.

One could think of STEAM Magnet Magnet as Narbonne 1.5 since we are affiliated wiht the larger school in some ways.  Clubs, activities, and athletics are schoolwide.  Classes not offered by the Magnet are sometimes available to our students through the larger school and the bell schedule is the same.

However, the STEAM Magnet has its own faculty, classrooms and extra funding.  We maintain smaller class sizes which are located mostly in one section of the school.  There is a dedicated Magnet Office in the Administration building, serving enrollment and counseling needs of our students.  Student and parents benefit by having a consistent counselor and administrator for all four years, promoting a greater awareness of academic and emotional growth.  Parents know exactly where to go when they have questions, concerns, or they simply need to drop something off!

COURSEWORK

Because we are a STEAM Magnet, students enrolling should be prepared to embark on a slightly more rigorous curriculum. Core classes (History, English, Science, and Mathematics)  are Honors level, and students are required to take Math AND Science each semester they are enrolled here. This exceeds the graduation requirements but better prepares students for the next step into a university. For this reason, we highly recommend that students have a Middle School G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher. Students may also be asked to agree to the Magnet Honor Code in order to support the integrity of our students. Check out the STEAM course chart link to the left, along with an explanation of Advanced Placement courses available to our students.

Students may also opt to take college courses while they are still in High School! Narbonne offers 2-3 courses per semester after school on our campus. Typically they are electives that will earn credit from Harbor College! What's more, those students who are especially motivated can take courses over the summer at local community colleges tuition-free! Most of our students graduate having already earned college credit!

SPRING 2023 ENRICHMENT COURSES:

LAUSD is offering more than 20 enrichment courses for students wishing to earn even more credits. Go to the website HERE and scroll down to the section for high school. Students can take courses ranging from Animation to Graphic Design and Environmental Studies!

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB - BEYOND THE BELL: In addition to tutoring, The Boys & Girls Club offers courses for enrichment such as Driver's Ed, Auto Mechanics, DECA, Conditioning, and Drill. Go to their page HERE to sign up

Dual Enrollment Classes

Narbonne offers students classes here on campus where students can earn both High School AND college credit!  Courses are offered after school through Harbor College.  Best of all, they are FREE!

In addition, Magnet students may opt to take our coding class in conjunction with CSU Dominguez Hills. Here students create aps around a central theme during their monthly field trips and the principles of coding here on campus on the other days.  This class is offered during the regular school day!

TUTORING

For those needing some extra assistance, tutoring is available both formally and informally. Most of our teachers remain in their rooms during nutrition and lunch, assisting students, hosting club meetings, or simply chatting with students. It is rare to find a STEAM classroom not occupied! The Boys and Girls Club generously hosts regular tutoring sessions. Narbonne has also hosted tutors from UCLA, CSU Long Beach, and more!

TRANSPORTATION

STEAM Magnet students are automatically offered transportation if they reside outside the 5-mile radius of the school. Typically there are 5 stops used for pick up/drop off. Unsure whether that address qualifies? Here is a link where you can check. Those living outside that circle are usually provided with routing information the week prior to the start of school.

For those who live inside the 5-mile radius or prefer public transportation, a limited number of free TAP Cards are available in the NHS Attendance Office  or here is a link to apply online.

For additional questions on bus transportation please call 1-800-LA BUSES (1-800-522-8737)

Activities

As mentioned above, athletics, clubs and performances are schoolwide.  Students have the opportunity to participate in the full range of activities at Narbonne.  In addition, the STEAM Magnet hosts events for its own students.  See the link at the bottom of the page for a list of clubs!

RESULTS!

Dedication and diligence pay off! We are so proud of our students! STEAM students are among the highest achievers at Narbonne! STEAM students have been NHS valedictorians for 8 of the past 10 years. More than 50% of our students make Honor Roll each term, and most importantly 100% of our seniors have graduated for the past 7 years! Our students rank 4th out of ALL High Schools in the South District in students meeting A-G college requirements.

STEAM STUDENT SPRINGS INTO ACTION!

Senior Jewel Corral noticed that students in her community needed school supplies and sprang into action! She contacted school and district officials, approached local businesses, and secured the assistance of the LAPD. Her efforts resulted in donations from the .99Stores, Salvation Army, Staples, the Harbor City Neighborhood Council, Narbonne families, and alumni. Costumed volunteers from Narbonne High, President Ave, and Normont Elementary Schools filled and distributed more than 1,000 backpacks of materials for students to use in their classes. Our gratitude goes out to Jewel, the volunteers, and local businesses, and the LAPD who contributed to making this such a successful event!

The backpack event conintued this year with even more success. Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, 1500 backpacks filled with school supplies were donated to local families just before school began! We hope to make this a yearly event! What a great example of what the community can do when they pull together!
