How to Apply (Instructions)

COURSEWORK

Because we are a STEAM Magnet, students enrolling should be prepared to embark on a slightly more rigorous curriculum. Core classes (History, English, Science, and Mathematics)  are Honors level, and students are required to take Math AND Science each semester they are enrolled here. This exceeds the graduation requirements but better prepares students for the next step into a university. For this reason, we highly recommend that students have a Middle School G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher. Students may also be asked to agree to the Magnet Honor Code in order to support the integrity of our students. Check out the STEAM course chart link to the left, along with an explanation of Advanced Placement courses available to our students.

Students may also opt to take college courses while they are still in High School! Narbonne offers 2-3 courses per semester after school on our campus. Typically they are electives that will earn credit from Harbor College! What's more, those students who are especially motivated can take courses over the summer at local community colleges tuition-free! Most of our students graduate having already earned college credit!

Spring 2024 ENRICHMENT COURSES:

LAUSD is offering more than 20 enrichment courses for students wishing to earn even more credits. Go to the website HERE and scroll down to the section for high school. Students can take courses ranging from Animation to Graphic Design and Environmental Studies!

TUTORING

For those needing some extra assistance, tutoring is available both formally and informally. Most of our teachers remain in their rooms during nutrition and lunch, assisting students, hosting club meetings, or simply chatting with students. It is rare to find a STEAM classroom not occupied! The Boys and Girls Club generously hosts regular tutoring sessions. Narbonne has also hosted tutors from UCLA, CSU Long Beach, and more!

TRANSPORTATION

There is a new "Opt-In" process for bus transportation for the 2024-2025 school year. Availability is limited and school bus seating will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. Magnet students and current riders will not automatically be renewed. The "Opt-in" process will be required every school year, except for students in a Special Education program with active transportation services. The District will offer transportation to all students outside a two-mile radius for secondary students. The process will begin April 10th and end May 3rd.The transportation opt-in process will continue to be available after May 3rd for accepted students from the wait/late list.

The link provided contains a step-by-step video that demonstrates how to request transportation. Clik on link:  lausd.org/schoolbus

As of now, all parents must opt-in through either the parent portal or when they originally accept a magnet seat (especially for new families without PINS)

If parents have any questions, please refer them to the Family Hotline at (213) 443-1300, Transportation Services Division at (213) 580-2920, or the TFA Website with FAQs at the bottom of page.

For those who live inside the 2-mile radius or prefer public transportation, a limited number of free TAP Cards are available in the NHS Attendance Office  or here is a link to apply online.

Activities

As mentioned above, athletics, clubs and performances are schoolwide.  Students have the opportunity to participate in the full range of activities at Narbonne.  In addition, the STEAM Magnet hosts events for its own students.  See the link at the bottom of the page for a list of clubs!

STEAM STUDENT SPRINGS INTO ACTION!

Senior Jewel Corral noticed that students in her community needed school supplies and sprang into action! She contacted school and district officials, approached local businesses, and secured the assistance of the LAPD. Her efforts resulted in donations from the .99Stores, Salvation Army, Staples, the Harbor City Neighborhood Council, Narbonne families, and alumni. Costumed volunteers from Narbonne High, President Ave, and Normont Elementary Schools filled and distributed more than 1,000 backpacks of materials for students to use in their classes. Our gratitude goes out to Jewel, the volunteers, and local businesses, and the LAPD who contributed to making this such a successful event!

The backpack event continued this year with even more success. Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, 1500 backpacks filled with school supplies were donated to local families just before school began! We hope to make this a yearly event! What a great example of what the community can do when they pull together!
